Alright, so this had been brought up in discussion with Aubrey. Here goes:
So, we figure Merrill has no concept of fair play, and neither does he really understand the whole "friendly duel" idea. In conversation, it came up that maybe part of the reason is that he can't trust anybody, even family.
This gave me the idea that maybe such is because his adopted father tried to murder him, I'm thinking after his mother died. This would create deep-seated trust issues for the remainder of his life. Is this going too far with the idea? Or is that something we can work around?
We've already established that he's got some degree of psycho/sociopathy due to isolation as a child, which would mostly just impair his ability to communicate and empathize with others. Would the recent addition just take it too far gone for the Emperor to consider using?
